Sea Lions Have Ears

Posted on

My husband Ken was (unknowingly) quite a bit of inspiration for this one. I was painting my sea lion and he refused to believe that it was a sea lion and not a seal. His basis was that the animal was too dark. We’ve seen sea lions in the wild in Alaska, so I understand where he’s coming from, however this particular one was a California sea lion, and I’m guessing they’re darker. But to patronize him, I looked it up (even though I took the picture and knew it was a sea lion), and actually the big difference is that sea lions have ears and seals don’t. In that way, Ken named the painting and also inspired the additions – “DARK” labels from Hershey’s kisses dark, and Dove chocolate special dark labels.  The circle on the lower left – “You Need Theme Music” was all me, just because I really thought this particular sea lion was entertaining the crowd and was pretty amused with himself.
